Program Description

Columns of Roman legions, hordes of Visigoth warriors, waves of Muslim conquerors and throngs of Catholic armies have fought over the plains of the Guadalquivir River valley and its most prominent city Seville for more than two millennium. Founded as the Roman city of Hispalis, Seville played host to each of the subsequent civilizations that dominated the Iberian Peninsula; but not until 1492 was the city catapulted onto the world’s stage. From the banks of the Guadalquivir, the wealth and power of the Spanish Empire was wielded from the Alcázar palace. The royal monopoly on all trade in the New World assured that Seville and its inland port would usher in Spain’s Golden Age. As the capital of Andalusia and Spain’s fourth largest city, Seville’s influence both domestically and internationally persist to today.

Through this beginning Spanish language and culture course, discover the origins of New World exploration and the influence of Spain's imperial power on the flowered streets of Seville. Contemplate the role of religion, politics, art and music on Andalusian culture while studying the world's third most spoken language. Enjoy tapas in the former Jewish quarter, gawk at the size of Spain’s largest gothic cathedral and feel the heart-stomping rhythm of a Flamenco performance. Read the royal correspondence from the likes of Columbus, Cortes and Pizarro at the Archivo General de Indias before taking an afternoon stroll in the Maria Luisa Park, home to the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. And when Seville has you begging for more, satisfy your cravings while you feast on the celebrated cities of Granada, Cordoba and Madrid.

From the labyrinth of corridors, courtyards and gardens of Granada’s Alhambra, to the monumental size and memorizing arches of Cordoba’s Great Mosque, to the opulence and beauty of Madrid’s Palacio Real, the depth and breadth of your exploration of Spain will seem limitless. The desire to understand more will inspire your language learning as you seek to connect with the people whose ancestors once held dominion over an empire where the sun never set.

The program and coursework is administered by Lynn-approved provider CIEE. All students are enrolled in a two-credit beginning Spanish language course (DJLC 200: Spanish Language and Culture in Seville, Spain). This course meets the J-term requirement for Language and Culture.
