Program Description

As the economic and political capital of Japan, the city of Tokyo is the centerpiece of the Greater Tokyo Area, the most populous metropolitan area on the globe. This ultra-modern, densely-populated city lives on the cutting edge of innovation while preserving the traditions and treasures of the Japanese people. From the Imperial Palace to the Tokyo National Museum, and including more than 50 Fortune Global 500 companies, no city encapsulates the past, present and future of Japan more than Tokyo.

Through this beginning Japanese language and culture course, you'll travel to the land of the rising sun with Lynn professor Dr. Mark Luttio. Born and raised in Japan, professor Luttio will be the cultural bridge between Eastern and Western philosophies. Gain insight into the language, customs and traditions of the Japanese. Walk through the busy streets of Shibuya, Tokyo’s shopping and entertainment district. Come face to face with the giant tunas of the Tsukiji Market before watching Japan’s giant athletes collide at a sumo match. Reach sensory overload with the sights and sounds of one of the world’s largest and fast-paced cities. And just before your operating system crashes, escape at nearly 200 miles per hour on the Shinkansen, Japan’s high-speed rail lines.

When the mass transit projectile comes to a stop, a slower-paced, traditional side of Japan is revealed. Step back in time and explore the ancient capital of Kyoto while staying in a traditional Japanese inn known as a “ryokan.” Among the temples and gardens your appreciation for the richness of Japanese culture will flourish along with a greater global perspective.

This program is administered by Lynn-approved provider CIEE. All students are enrolled in a two-credit beginning Japanese language and culture course (DJLC 200: Japanese Language and Culture in Tokyo, Japan) taught by Lynn professor Dr. Mark Luttio. This course meets the J-term requirement for Language and Culture.
