Program Description

Through the University for Peace (UPEACE), spend your J-term in Costa Rica fulfilling your two J-term requirements.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly, UPEACE's mission is "to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace and with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations."

Through this Citizenship Project and Spanish language program, you can discover tools to effectively help appraise and improve the world around you. This is not your normal Citizenship Project; students will start by understanding the importance of empathy, using techniques of mediation, non-violent communication, and story-telling to apply empathy to concrete actions that can be used in everyday life. By the end of the program you will provide a Social Responsibility Community Engagement Plan for your own project to influence your community for your return to the United States.

The program and coursework is administered by Lynn-approved provider UPEACE. All students are enrolled in a two-credit Citizenship Project course (DJCP 100) and a two-credit beginning Spanish language course (DJLC 200: Spanish Language and Culture). The Citizenship Project course meets the J-term requirement for Citizenship Project and the Spanish language course meets the J-term requirement for Language and Culture.
